This two-day course is designed to take your project management skills to the next level. Successful project management depends on both starting and ending projects well. On the first day, you’ll take a deep dive into the elements of creating an efficient and organized Project Work Plan. On day two, we’ll focus on the basic stages of project closeout and how to reach two of a project’s most difficult milestones: Substantial Performance, and Total Performance. If you’re involved in project management at any level, this is a course you won’t want to miss!

What will you learn?
Using “Milestone Success Planning,” you’ll learn how to develop a plan that clearly communicates the sequence of events required to construct the project and to meet key milestones. This is an important project management tool that can be used to provide information to others about how the project will be managed and constructed, and as a “road map” for the project team.
By the end of day 1 you will create a project plan using “Project Milestone Planning” techniques, and gain an understanding of the elements that create an effective plan. This includes:
- Identifying Risk and Opportunity
- Project Scope
- Contractual Requirements
- Project Budget
- Assigning the Best Project Team
- Site Logistics
- Sequence of Work
- Project Schedule
- Project Resources
Day two will focus on the project closeout and how the principles of organizing early, teamwork and communication work together to achieve a successful outcome. You’ll learn the basic phases of closing out a project and the requirements for each phase will be identified and discussed so that you’ll learn how avoid the last 3% of the project becoming 15% of the effort.
Topics covered on Day 2 will include: O&M manual development and tracking, pre-construction meetings, commissioning planning, permits, deficiency, QA/QC management, and more! Participants will be introduced to best practices and “tips and tricks” which will expedite and simplify the takeover of a project by its Owner from the Contractor.
By the end of day 2 you will understand the basic stages of construction close-out:
Phase 1: Pre-Construction Closeout
- Internal handover
- Principles of organizing early, teamwork and communication
- O&M manual development and tracking
- Closeout requirements and submissions
- Submittals requirements and submissions
Phase 2: Construction Closeout
- Substantial Performance requirements both contractually and regulatory
Phase 3: Post Construction Closeout
- Final Completion requirements both contractually and regulatory
Phase 4: Organizational Closeout
- Wrapping up and demobilizing from the site
Phase 5: Subcontractor Closeout
Phase 6: Financial Closeout:
- Internal review and lessons learned
