Construction 101 & 102
Recently updated in 2026, Construction 101, and the newly released Construction 102, have been created by the industry, for the industry – developed by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) to give participants an opportunity to see how different pieces in the construction industry fit together.
Who Should Take Construction 101?
This course has something for everyone – whether you have years of experience or are new to the industry. Don’t be misled by the ‘101’ – over 30% of our course attendees have 10+ years of industry experience! Perfect for procurement professionals and buyers, developing leaders, as well as operations and administrative staff. This course is the industry knowledge boot camp that will support your team’s success.
You’ll get valuable insight into the various industry stakeholders and their roles/responsibilities, construction documents and contracts, risk management, construction law, bidding and tendering, and more!
What Will You Learn?
- • Gain an understanding of the project decision-making hierarchy, the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder;
- • Understand various project delivery methods used in Canada;
- • Develop an understanding of preconstruction activities, construction activities, and overall project maturity from project initiation to project completion;
- • Gain a basic understanding of regulations, including Building Codes, Health and Safety and Provincial Construction Acts;
- • Gain knowledge of the construction association support network for practitioners;
- • Gain a basic understanding of procurement and tendering processes;
- • Understand standard construction contract types;
- • Participate in and learn from various scenarios found in everyday construction-related issues;
- • Understand project close-out and what constitutes ready for takeover.
Course Format
- • Live, Online, instructor-led training (via Zoom), with a cohort of industry peers. VICA has two instructors that teach this course; Debbie Hicks & Tim Williams. You will receive the Zoom link from your instructor.
- • Three (3) sessions (four and a half hours each) over the course of three days
Who Should Take Construction 102?
While Construction 101 is not a prerequisite for Construction 102, it is strongly recommended to take 101 first. Construction 102 is for individuals working in or moving into management, coordination, administration, or consulting roles with the ICI and Civil construction industry such as:
- • Project managers or coordinators; contractors, consultants, or owner representatives
- • Field supervisors and site staff, including those tending Superintendents
- • Consultants: architects, engineers, estimators, and contract administrators
- • Administrative and operations support staff
- • Owner/Developer representatives and public-sector staff
- • Vendors, suppliers, and service providers, including lawyers, commercial realtors, insurance and bonding professionals
- • Contractors, consultants and real estate professionals new to Canada
What Will You Learn?
Building on Construction 101, Construction 102 introduces the attendee to a deeper understanding of two critical and fundamental themes and industry best practices:
• Advanced procurement
• Advanced contract administration, and standardized contract terms and conditions
A third theme is current and future trends and tools available and deployed today in the Canadian construction industry, specifically in the ICI sectors.
Learning Outcomes:
- • Advance a fundamental understanding of procurement principles that apply to bidding and tendering and request for proposals (RFPs)
- • Advance learning about traditional contemplations of construction contract terms and conditions used in ICI and civil construction in Canada
- • Advance learning of contract administration processes, including change management, progress billing and project closeout, including Ready-for-Takeover
- • Discussion and contemplation of emerging trends, technology in use today and tomorrow, their impacts and potential
