Another Brick In Nepal (ABIN) continues work on Sharada School in Aapchaur

Now that monsoon season is finally over, work is able to continue on Another Brick in Nepal's (ABIN) second project: the Sharada School in Aapchaur. The foundation is complete, the rebar is tied in place for the first floor columns, and work has begun on the walls.

Many VICA members have supported ABIN in their efforts to rebuild Nepal with the support of the local community. This includes: 

On October 16th, nine members of ABIN are travelling to Nepal to visit Sharada, as well as ABIN's previous project.

The ABIN Board is made up of a group of like-minded people living on Vancouver Island. Rob Tournour, of VICA Member Rob Tournour Masonry, started the organization with his wife Sumitra Tornour, Randy Jones, and Alana Jones.

​Legislation better protects temporary foreign workers from exploitation

The legislation is intended to recognize the important role foreign workers have in B.C.’s growing economy. While most employers and recruiters are committed to treating foreign nationals fairly, there are some who require closer scrutiny and enforcement action. In 2017, there were 47,620 work permits issued for foreign workers destined for B.C. The third largest sector is accommodation and food services (8%), followed by construction (6%) and manufacturing (5%).

Port Alberni Awards Largest Construction Contract in Municipal History

On September 4, 2018, Council for the City of Port Alberni unanimously passed a motion to award the main construction contract for the upcoming Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades project to Tritech Group for $17,128,429.53 plus GST - the largest construction contract awarded in the City of Port Alberni’s history.
